Youkaidou is a Game Boy Advance title from 0, developed by a small team whose name escapes me now. It came out during that later part of the GBA's life, when developers were really pushing what the hardware could do with more experimental ideas, especially in the RPG space. It doesn't have the flash of some bigger releases from that time, but it has a quiet, distinctive presence.
You control a young merchant traveling the backroads of feudal Japan, and your main goal is to build a business by trading with supernatural creatures, not slaying them. The core of the game is navigating the world screen by screen, where you'll encounter yokai and enter a negotiation phase instead of combat. Two mechanics define these encounters: the outcome of your bartering shifts dramatically based on your location (a riverbank, a dense forest) and the in-game time of day, meaning a deal that works at dawn might completely fail by dusk. You also manage a limited inventory of unique goods that certain yokai desire, forcing you to plan routes and anticipate needs. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and a wrong guess during a trade can set you back significantly. It feels like a careful, thoughtful puzzle where every decision carries real weight.
