Play Ys 1 Online
You play as Adol bumping into enemies instead of attacking—sounds odd, but nailing those angled charges feels weirdly good. The tiny world’s got this eerie charm with its synthy soundtrack and NPCs who all seem to know something you don’t.

I first played Ys 1 on the NES back in 1987, a version developed by Nihon Falcom. It was a time when action RPGs were still finding their footing on consoles, and this one stood out with its brisk pace and distinctive style. The game didn't try to overwhelm you with scale; instead, it offered a compact, focused adventure that felt right at home on the system.
You control Adol, a young swordsman exploring the land of Esteria, and your goal is to uncover the mystery behind a demonic invasion. Combat is unique: you don't press a button to attack, but rather ram into enemies at an angle to deal damage. The world is divided into distinct screens that load as you move between them, and you'll spend a lot of time in multi-level dungeons hunting for keys and vital items. The pacing is quick, but the difficulty can spike sharply, especially in later areas where enemies hit hard and healing is scarce. Despite the challenge, there's a real sense of momentum as you push forward, piecing together the story and steadily growing stronger.
