I picked up Ys 2 for the NES back in 1988, a release from Nihon Falcom that continued right where the first game left off. It was a time when action RPGs were still finding their footing on the console, and this one stood out with its brisk pacing and distinctive visual style. You don't see many games from that era that flow quite like this one does.
You control Adol again, exploring towns and dungeons screen by screen, bumping into enemies to attack them. Your main goal is to uncover the mystery of the land of Ys and stop an ancient evil from returning. This time you get access to fire magic, which lets you shoot projectiles and adds a nice layer to combat, especially against enemies you can't just ram into. The difficulty is pretty relentless, especially in later areas where timing your movements becomes crucial. It feels fast and demanding, but pulling off a clean run through a monster-filled room is incredibly satisfying.
