Game Overview

Z-Out came out on the Amiga in 1990, published by U.S. Gold and developed by Rainbow Arts. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling shooters that really tested the hardware, pushing colorful graphics and smooth scrolling. You could play it alone or with a friend in co-op, which was a great feature for the time, even if it meant sacrificing some conveniences.

You pilot a small, agile starfighter through six distinct levels, each filled with organic-looking alien creatures that swarm the screen. Your main goal is simply to survive the onslaught, destroying everything in your path while collecting power-ups to enhance your ship's weapons. The pacing is relentless; enemies pour in from all sides, and the limited power-ups mean you have to be strategic about which ones you grab. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic dance of dodging and firing, where one mistake can quickly lead to a game over.
