Play 10-Yard Fight Online
Classic NES football where you either play full games (US version) or race the clock to score (Japanese version). Simple controls, brutal difficulty spikes, and surprisingly tense 2-player matches.
10-Yard Fight came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, developed by Irem. It was one of the earliest football games on the system, arriving at a time when sports simulations were still figuring out how to translate the complexity of a real game into something playable with a simple controller. It didn't try to be a full league simulator; it was just straightforward, no-frills football.
You control the quarterback on offense, choosing plays from a very limited set and then either handing off the ball or passing it downfield. The main goal is to move the ball screen by screen, advancing ten yards at a time against a defense that gets noticeably tougher with each stage. The signature mechanics are the side-scrolling field, where you see only a small portion of the action at once, and the simple but timing-based passing. The pacing is methodical, almost slow, but the difficulty ramps up quickly, making every first down feel earned. It feels like a barebones but tense grind where a single mistake can cost you the entire drive.
