Game Overview

I first played 10-Yard Fight on the NES back in the mid-80s, a port of Irem's 1983 arcade game. It was one of the earlier football titles on the system, a straightforward attempt to translate the sport into pixels and simple controls. It didn't have the complexity or teams of later games; it was just you, the field, and a very basic playbook.

You control the quarterback, selecting one of four plays before each down. Your main goal is to move the ball downfield, screen by screen, to score a touchdown. The key mechanics are handing off the ball to a running back or passing it; success depends heavily on timing your movements to avoid the defensive players who swarm you. The game is brutally difficult at first, demanding you learn the exact paths and timings for each play to make any progress. It feels rigid and repetitive, but breaking through the defense for a long run provides a genuine, earned thrill.
