64th Street: A Detective Story is one of those classic arcade beat 'em ups that feels like it walked straight out of the '90s—because it did. You pick between Rick, a grizzled detective who punches like he’s got bills to pay, or Allen, his younger, slightly more agile apprentice. Their job? Rescue some rich guy’s daughter from a shady corporation, which mostly involves punching your way through waves of goons in alleys, warehouses, and the usual beat 'em up haunts.
It’s got that Final Fight vibe—move right, smack people, occasionally duck or step up/down to avoid a pipe to the face. The weapons lying around help (baseball bats, knives, the occasional explosive barrel), but half the fun is just seeing how long you can keep a combo going before some big bruiser knocks you flat. Boss fights are exactly what you’d expect: big, loud, and happy to cheat.
It’s not reinventing the genre, but if you miss the days of quarters on the arcade cabinet and enemies who spawn just to get kicked in the teeth, this one’s a solid time-waster.
