I remember picking up A Nightmare on Elm Street for the NES back in 1989, developed by Rare and published by LJN. It was one of those licensed games that tried to do something a little different on the system, fitting right in with the era's mix of ambitious and sometimes awkward adaptations. You don't see many horror games from that time, especially ones that tried to translate a movie's specific brand of terror into 8-bit action.

You control one of four teenagers, either alone or with friends, moving screen by screen through suburban neighborhoods and nightmare realms. The main goal is to find and destroy all of Freddy Krueger's bones, which are hidden in specific locations. You switch between the real world and the dream world by finding beds to sleep in; the dream world is where the real danger is, with Freddy actively hunting you. You collect "Dream Warrior" powers that give you temporary abilities, like throwing fireballs or creating a shield, which are essential for surviving his attacks. The pacing is tense because you're always managing your sleep meter; if it drops too low, you're forced into the nightmare and become vulnerable. It feels like a constant, stressful scramble to stay safe while hunting for items before Freddy corners you.
