Action 52 is a 1991 Nintendo Entertainment System cartridge published by Active Enterprises. It was a strange release even for its time, a compilation of 52 short games sold at a premium price. The concept was ambitious, but the execution was unlike anything else on the platform, for better and for worse.
You control a different character in each game, from a knight to a spaceship, with the main objective simply being to survive each level. Signature mechanics include awkward jumping, imprecise shooting, and navigating levels that often break their own rules. The pacing is either brutally fast or confusingly slow, and the difficulty is almost entirely due to glitches and poor design rather than skill. It feels like wrestling with a machine that is actively fighting back.
