Action in New York is basically Contra with a jetpack—which, honestly, makes everything way more chaotic in the best way. You’re still blasting through waves of enemies, but now you can zip up into the air or hover just out of reach when things get too intense. The controls take a second to get used to (landing feels a little slippery), but once you do, it’s pure 8-bit mayhem. Some of the level designs really play with verticality, forcing you to think about positioning instead of just running and gunning. The music’s got that classic NES energy too—all crunchy synths and relentless beats. If you’ve ever wished Contra had a bit more airtime, this one’s a no-brainer.
