AD&D Hillsfar on NES is one of those weird D&D spinoffs that doesn’t quite play like anything else. You start off wandering the city, doing odd jobs—pickpocketing, arena fights, that kind of thing—but the controls feel stiff, like your character’s moving through molasses.
The minigames are hit or miss. The lockpicking one is just memorizing patterns, and the horseback archery feels clunky. But there’s something oddly satisfying about sneaking past guards in the thief missions, even if the AI isn’t exactly sharp.
It’s got that old-school D&D flavor, but the pacing drags. You’ll spend a lot of time grinding for gold just to afford basic gear. AD&D Hillsfar isn’t terrible, but it’s definitely more of a curiosity than a must-play.
