Hillsfar came out for the NES in 1993, published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It was part of that wave of late-era console games trying to bring deeper PC-style RPGs to a living room audience, with mixed but memorable results. The game doesn't hold your hand; it just drops you into its world and expects you to figure things out, for better or worse.
You control a custom adventurer trying to earn a place in the city's guilds by completing quests, which usually means stealing from the wealthy or fighting in the arena. The gameplay splits between first-person dungeon crawling and top-down action in the city streets. Combat is simple but unforgiving, relying on timing your sword swings or arrow shots. The pacing is slow, deliberate, and often frustrating due to frequent random encounters and a high difficulty curve. It feels like a rough, unpolished challenge that rewards persistence more than skill.
