Game Overview

The first time I fired up Dragon Ball Z - Shin Budokai Another Road, I didn’t expect the story mode to hit so differently. Instead of the usual timeline, you're thrown into this alternate future where Trunks is dealing with a whole new kind of chaos — Majin Buu-level chaos, except it spirals way past what you’d expect. You’re not just rewatching old fights; you’re part of something original, and it actually feels like you have to think through what battles you pick and how you power up between missions.

Fights are fast. Like, blink-and-you-miss-it fast. You dash in, chain combos, teleport behind your opponent, and maybe blast them across the sky — all before their Ki bar fills up. I spent the first hour just messing around in versus mode to get a handle on all the movement and timing, and even then, the transformations still caught me off guard. Hit the right combo when your energy’s up, and boom — Super Saiyan, instant damage boost, and a huge shift in how aggressive you can be.

What really surprised me in Dragon Ball Z - Shin Budokai Another Road is how deep the combat can get. There are over 20 fighters, and they don’t all play the same. Some characters feel sluggish but hit like trucks, others are all about staying mobile and spamming energy blasts. It’s not just button mashing — you start figuring out what works for who. I kept coming back to Teen Gohan and Majin Vegeta because of how wild their ultimate moves feel when you pull them off in the middle of a tense match.

Controls are easy to pick up but have layers if you want to go deeper. Here's how they break down:

Basic Controls:

  • Analog Stick / D-pad: Move
  • Square: Rush attack
  • Triangle: Smash attack
  • Circle: Energy Blast
  • Cross: Guard
  • L-button: Gather Ki
  • R-button: Aura Burn

Ki Controls:

  • Circle: Energy Blast
  • Forward + Circle: Special Attack
  • Back + Circle: Special Attack 2
  • Down + Circle: Transform (when Ki gauge is 4 or higher)
  • Up + Circle: Ultimate Attack
  • Up + Circle + Circle: Alternate Ultimate Attack if the first fails

If you’ve got a second player nearby, the ad-hoc battle mode is a blast — as long as you both know how to gather Ki and dodge at the right time, otherwise someone’s getting stomped. It took me a few matches to even figure out how the camera shifts when things get chaotic, but once I got used to it, it made the fights feel way more cinematic without getting in the way.

This isn’t just a flashy fighting game slapped with a popular name. Dragon Ball Z - Shin Budokai Another Road plays like something the developers actually cared about, especially when it comes to balancing fanservice with legit gameplay challenge. It’s the kind of game where one more fight turns into an hour before you even realize it.
