Play Alpha Mission (Europe) Online
You weave through bullet hell collecting armor pieces to upgrade your jet, then lose it all when you slip up—back to square one with that weak starter gun. The 8-bit soundtrack keeps your pulse up as you experiment with different power-up combos.

Alpha Mission came out for the NES in 1987, developed by SNK. It was part of that wave of arcade-style shooters that filled out the library in the late 80s, offering a straightforward but demanding experience. You don't get much story, just a ship and a lot of enemies to shoot.
You pilot a spacecraft through horizontally scrolling levels, destroying waves of enemy ships and ground targets. Your main goal is to survive each stage and defeat the boss waiting at the end. A key mechanic involves collecting armor parts that let you upgrade your main weapon through several distinct forms; each piece changes your firepower significantly. You also gather secondary weapons, like homing missiles or lasers, which you can switch between as the situation demands. The game is fast and quite difficult, with enemy patterns that require quick reflexes and memorization. Losing a life often means dropping back to a weaker weapon state, which adds tension to every mistake. It feels tense and rewarding when you finally chain together a good run.
