Alpha Mission came out on the NES in 1985, developed by SNK. It was one of the many shooters on the system, but it had a particular focus on strategy and power management that set it apart from more straightforward blasters. You pilot a lone ship against waves of alien craft, and the screen scrolls vertically, pushing you forward through a relentless assault.

You control a spacecraft, moving it in all directions to dodge enemy fire and lining up shots to clear a path. The main goal is simply to survive each stage, destroying everything in your way until you reach and defeat a large boss. Its signature mechanics involve collecting power-up capsules to build a secondary weapon system with multiple selectable options, like lasers or homing missiles, and gathering shield energy to absorb a few hits before you lose a life. The pacing is methodical; you have to be deliberate about which power-ups you grab and when to use your special weapons, because a single mistake can strip your hard-earned upgrades away. It feels like a constant, tense calculation of risk versus firepower.
