I picked up Altered Beast: Guardian of the Realms for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a time when the handheld was full of ambitious action titles. It was developed by 3d6 Games and published by THQ, a familiar name from that era. This game was a reimagining of the old arcade beat 'em up, trying to bring that style of play into a more exploratory format on the GBA.

You control a warrior resurrected by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from the underworld. The main objective is to fight through side-scrolling levels, defeating enemies and absorbing spirit orbs that allow you to transform into powerful beasts like a werewolf or a dragon. The signature mechanics involve this transformation system, which grants unique attacks and abilities, and the exploration of large, interconnected stages with some light puzzle elements.
