Anteater came out in 1982 from Stern Electronics, an arcade game that fit right in with the maze-chase titles of the era. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it had a strange charm with its oddball concept. You don't see many games where you play as an anteater hunting for food.
You control the anteater's long, sticky tongue, whipping it through narrow maze tunnels to snag larvae. The main goal is to eat all the grubs on each screen while avoiding the patrolling ants. Your tongue is your only tool; its tip is safe, but if an ant touches any other part, you lose a life. You also have to eat the worms from behind, or they'll bite you. The pacing is tense, with ants closing in quickly, making each flick of the tongue a careful risk. It feels like a constant, nervous dance between hunger and danger.
