Aquajack came out in 1989 as an arcade game from Namco. It was part of that era where you'd find a lot of simple, fast action games designed to eat quarters, sitting alongside more complex titles. You don't hear about it much, but it had a very specific, tense feel.
You pilot a small submarine through a horizontally scrolling ocean. Your main goal is to survive as long as possible, which means constantly dodging mines, outmaneuvering enemy submarines, and avoiding swarms of jellyfish. You have a limited supply of torpedoes to clear a path or take out threats directly ahead of you. The screen scrolls at a fixed, relentless pace, forcing quick decisions; hesitation means a collision and losing a life. It feels like a desperate, non-stop race against the environment itself.
