Ark Area is one of those classic arcade shooters from 1989 that somehow still feels fresh today. You pilot a little fighter that can fire in all directions—which is good, because enemies swarm in from every angle. The screen gets chaotic fast, but in that satisfying old-school way where you’re weaving through bullets and praying your reflexes hold up.
UPL packed this one with weird, cool touches. The afterimage stages mess with your eyes (in a good way), and the chunky pixel explosions have this weight to them that newer games often miss. It’s tough, but the kind of tough that makes you want to drop in just one more coin.
This Arcade Archives version keeps things simple: online leaderboards if you want to brag about your score, and the usual PS4 sharing stuff if you manage to pull off something ridiculous. Mostly, it’s just a solid port of a shooter that deserved more love back in the day.
