Play Asteroids-mame Online
You're a triangle in space, spinning and blasting asteroids into smaller chunks while dodging UFOs—the more you break, the more chaos you have to weave through.

Asteroids, released in 1981 by Atari, Inc., is one of those games that feels like it belongs in a dark, noisy arcade even when you're playing it through MAME decades later. It came out during a time when vector graphics were still a novelty, and the stark, glowing lines against a black screen gave it a clean, almost futuristic look compared to the more colorful raster games of the era. There was no story, no characters; just you, a ship, and a whole lot of rocks.
You control a small triangular ship, maneuvering it with thrust, rotate, and fire controls. The goal is simple: destroy all the asteroids on the screen to advance. The signature mechanics are the way the rocks break apart; large asteroids split into medium ones, which then fracture into small, fast-moving chunks that quickly fill the screen. You also have to contend with occasional UFOs that shoot back, adding another layer of danger. The pacing is relentless; the screen gets more and more crowded the longer you survive, demanding constant movement and precise shooting. It feels like a tense, high-stakes dance where one wrong move ends everything.
