I first played Asteroids on the Atari 2600 back in 1981, a version developed by Brad Stewart. It was one of those games that felt right at home on the console, simple in concept but sharp in execution. The screen was mostly black, with just a few white shapes and your ship, but that was all it needed to pull you in.

You control a small triangular ship, rotating and thrusting through an empty field as asteroids drift toward you. Your goal is to shoot them into smaller pieces until they vanish, all while avoiding collisions and the occasional UFO. The screen wraps around, so drifting off one edge brings you back on the opposite side; hyperspace offers a risky teleport to a random spot. The game starts slow but quickly becomes frantic as the screen fills with fragments. It feels tense and immediate, like you're always one mistake from disaster.
