Game Overview

Donkey Kong Jr. flips the script—this time, Mario’s the bad guy, and you’re the little monkey scrambling to save your dad. The Atari 2600 version cuts a few corners compared to the arcade, but it’s still a frantic climb through vines and chains while dodging Snapjaws and those obnoxious purple birds that dive at you.

You’ll grab fruit to drop on enemies (bonus points if you take out multiple at once), but the real trick is mastering the double-vine climb to speed past danger. One wrong jump into the water or a long fall, though, and you’re down a life. The levels loop after you beat them, just faster and meaner.

It’s weird seeing Mario as the villain, but watching him get kicked into the distance after you free Donkey Kong never gets old.
