I remember picking up Donkey Kong Land for the Game Boy back in 1995, a time when handheld games were still mostly simple black and white affairs. Developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, it was their attempt to bring the feel of the SNES Donkey Kong Country onto the small screen, and for the most part, it worked surprisingly well given the hardware.
You control either Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong, making your way through side-scrolling levels to reclaim your stolen banana hoard from King K. Rool. The game plays out screen by screen, with you jumping over gaps, bouncing off enemies, and grabbing barrels to throw. You collect bananas for points and the letters K-O-N-G for extra lives, and the pacing is pretty relentless; bees chase you, birds dive bomb, and one wrong jump sends you back to the start. It feels tense and rewarding when you finally nail a tricky section.
