Asuka & Asuka came out in arcades in 1990, developed by Visco Corporation. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling shooters that filled arcades back then, though it had a unique time travel theme that set it apart from the usual military or sci-fi settings. You didn't see many games mixing dinosaurs and samurai in the same run.
You pilot a small jet that travels through different time periods, shooting down everything from pterodactyls to ancient warriors. The main goal is to survive each stage, destroy the mid-boss and end-level guardian, and collect power-ups to strengthen your ship's weapons. A signature mechanic is the option to switch between a forward-firing shot and a wider, but weaker, spread shot depending on the enemy formations. The game is known for its aggressive enemy patterns and dense bullet clouds, especially in later stages, making careful positioning and memorization key. It feels tense but rewarding when you finally learn a stage's rhythm and push through.
