Athletic World came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, published by Bandai. It was part of that early wave of NES games that tried to get you off the couch, using the Power Pad accessory. It felt like a strange, ambitious experiment, a physical challenge awkwardly translated into 8-bit.
You control an on-screen runner who mimics your actions on the floor mat. The main objective is to complete a series of Olympic-style events by stomping on the correct panels to run, jump, and dodge obstacles. The signature mechanics are entirely physical; you sprint in place for the dash events and time your jumps on the pad to clear hurdles or leap between rafts in the river event. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty comes from the clumsy interface more than the game design itself. It feels like a chaotic, sweaty, and weirdly fun session of NES fitness at its jankiest.
