Game Overview

Aussie Rules Footy came out for the NES in 1991 from Laser Beam Entertainment. It was one of the few attempts to bring Australian rules football to a console, and it arrived late in the NES lifecycle when players were used to more complex sports titles. The game tried to capture a sport that was mostly unknown outside Australia, which made it a curious oddity on the system.

You control a team of players, switching between them to pass, kick, and tackle. The main goal is to outscore the opponent by kicking goals between the central posts or behinds through the side posts. Key mechanics include bouncing the ball while running (a real sport rule) and executing speckies, where players jump on each other's backs to mark the ball. The pace is fast, almost frantic, and the difficulty comes from the tight controls and the AI's aggressive tackling. It feels like a rough, simplified interpretation of the sport that demands quick decisions.
