Back To Stone (EU) is one of those GBA action games that starts slow but pulls you in. You wake up as this nameless guy who's been experimented on, half-demon now, with this weird stone power. The first thing you do is smash your way out of a lab, and the controls feel heavy, like your character is still figuring out his own strength.
The isometric view makes some jumps tricky, but the environments change often enough to keep things fresh. One minute you're in a swamp where the water slows you down, next you're sliding across ice patches trying not to fall into pits. The demon bosses are the highlight though - each one forces you to use the environment, like luring one into wind currents to weaken it.
What surprised me was how much story there is for a GBA title. The cutscenes are simple but give just enough context about the black book and why the world went to hell. Back To Stone (EU) isn't perfect - some puzzles feel clunky, and the stone power could've been used more - but it's got this grim charm that sticks with you.
