Bare Knuckle II (or Streets of Rage 2 if you're not playing the Japanese version) is one of those beat 'em ups that just feels right. You pick from four characters—Axel’s got his classic uppercut, Blaze is quick as hell, Max is a powerhouse, and Skate... well, he’s basically a kid on rollerblades wrecking grown men, which never gets old.
The streets are packed with thugs, and Mr. X’s goons actually put up a decent fight this time—no mindless punching bags here. The music? Absolute fire, all crunchy synth beats that make every punch feel heavier. First time I played, I got wrecked by the baseball bat guys in stage 2, but once you get the rhythm down, pulling off combos feels stupidly satisfying.
It’s the kind of game where you’ll still find new little details even after a dozen playthroughs.
