Game Overview

Bare Knuckle II, known as Streets of Rage II outside Japan, came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992. Sega developed and published it, and it was one of the defining beat 'em ups for the system, standing out in a genre crowded with arcade ports and simpler brawlers. It felt like a step up from the first game, with more detailed sprites and a greater sense of momentum in its urban decay.

You control one of four characters, like Axel or Blaze, and fight through screen after screen of thugs to take down the crime lord Mr. X. The core of the game is your basic attacks combined with special moves that cost a bit of health, alongside team-up attacks if you have a partner. You move from left to right, clearing each area of enemies before progressing, occasionally battling sub-bosses in enclosed spaces. The pacing is aggressive, and the difficulty can spike sharply, especially when enemies attack from both sides. It feels responsive and weighty, with every punch and throw having a solid impact that makes the chaos satisfying to control.
