Bases Loaded GB came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Jaleco. It was one of the early baseball games on the handheld, arriving at a time when portable sports titles were still finding their footing. You got a full baseball experience in your pocket, complete with team management and real-time gameplay, which felt like a decent accomplishment for the hardware.
You control a full baseball team, both pitching and batting, with the goal of outscoring your opponent across nine innings. The game uses a screen by screen view; when batting, you watch the pitcher wind up and then try to time your swing as the ball crosses the plate. On defense, you aim your pitches using a cursor and try to place them where the batter won’t make solid contact. Player stats actually matter here; some batters have more power, while certain pitchers throw harder or with more break. The difficulty is fair but can feel punishing if your timing is off. It captures the tension of a close baseball game surprisingly well.
