Bases Loaded 4 came out for the NES in 1993, a late release from Jaleco that pushed the aging hardware a little further. It arrived when many players were already moving to 16-bit systems, but it offered a bigger, faster version of the series' arcade-style baseball. You control all nine defensive positions and take turns batting, aiming to outscore the opponent over nine innings. The signature mechanics include a unique pitching system where you select a type and then aim a cursor within a shrinking circle; hitting involves timing your swing to meet the ball's location. Fielding is simplified, with players automatically moving toward ground balls, though you still need to time your throws to bases. The game moves quickly, with large character sprites and a faster pace than earlier entries, but the AI can be punishing on higher difficulty settings. It feels like a straightforward, no-frills arcade experience that focuses purely on the back-and-forth at the plate and in the field.
