Game Overview

Extra Bases came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by TOSE and published by Nintendo. It was part of that early wave of portable sports games, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate complex team mechanics onto a small, monochrome screen. This one tried to capture a full baseball experience without the hardware to make it look flashy, so it had to rely on its mechanics.

You control the entire team, handling pitching, batting, and fielding. The main goal is to win games by outscoring the computer opponent across nine innings. Signature mechanics include a pitching system where you select a type and location, hoping to fool the batter, and a fielding view that switches to a close up, side perspective when the ball is in play, making catches and throws feel more immediate. The pacing is deliberate, not rushed, and the difficulty comes from reading the opponent's patterns. It feels like a thoughtful, almost meditative take on baseball for such a simple system.
