Game Overview

Extra Innings came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, published by Sony Imagesoft. It was one of the earlier baseball games on the system, arriving before some of the more polished franchises really took hold. You could tell it was trying to carve out a space in a genre that was still finding its footing on the 16-bit hardware.

You control all nine fielders, switching between them to chase down hits, and you handle every pitch and swing from the batter's box. The main goal is to win games, either in single matches or through a full season mode. Key mechanics include a timing-based pitching meter that affects your throw's accuracy and a fielding system where you have to manually run to the ball's landing spot. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and fielding, especially, can feel a bit sluggish and unforgiving. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes clumsy attempt to translate baseball into pixels.
