Rainbow Islands Extra is one of those Genesis games that looks cute but will absolutely wreck you if you're not careful. You play as Bubby or Bobby (or their human versions—depends on the mode), shooting rainbows that double as platforms, traps for enemies, and sometimes your only way out of a tight spot. The first few levels trick you into thinking it's all sunshine and rainbows (literally), but then the difficulty spikes hard.
The Japanese version has some neat extras, like different power-ups and a few tweaked mechanics that make it feel a little smoother than other releases. The music’s got that classic SEGA charm too—catchy but just chaotic enough to match the gameplay. If you grew up with Bubble Bobble or just love old-school platformers that don’t hold your hand, this one’s a blast—just be ready to retry some levels a few (dozen) times.
