I picked up E.T. The Extra Terrestrial: Escape from Planet Earth on Game Boy Color around the time it came out. It was developed by Software Creations and published by NewKidCo, one of those licensed games that felt pretty common on the handheld. The GBC had a lot of these tie-ins, and this one tried to capture the movie’s charm in a simple adventure format.
You control both E.T. and Elliott, switching between them to overcome different obstacles. E.T. can levitate objects to clear paths or access higher areas, while Elliott moves faster and interacts with human characters. The main goal is to help E.T. assemble his communication device so he can phone home. You explore areas screen by screen, collecting parts and avoiding hazards like scientists and wildlife. The pacing is methodical, and some puzzles require patience. It feels like a straightforward, slightly clunky adventure that captures a bit of the film’s spirit.
