You pick your starter, wander through Johto’s tall grass as day turns to night, and realize halfway through that there’s a whole other region waiting when you’re done. The colors pop, the Pokémon feel alive, and that boat ride to Kanto still blows your mind.
Pokemon Gold came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. It arrived at a time when handheld games were gaining more depth and color, building directly on what made the original Pokemon Red and Blue compelling without simply rehashing the same world.
You control a young trainer who explores the Johto region, capturing Pokemon, battling other trainers, and challenging gym leaders to earn badges. The main goal is to defeat the Elite Four and become the champion, but the journey expands when you discover the entire Kanto region from the first game is also accessible. Signature mechanics include a real time clock that changes in game events based on the time of day, and breeding Pokemon to obtain eggs with moves they wouldn't normally learn. The pacing is steady, with some challenging boss fights, especially toward the end. It feels like a bigger, more living world than its predecessors, full of small surprises and reasons to keep exploring.
