Game Overview

Pokémon Crystal still holds up as one of the best in the series—even after all these years. The first thing you notice? The sprites actually move now, which felt like a huge deal back on the Game Boy Color. And yeah, you can finally play as a girl, which was a big deal if you were tired of always being stuck as the generic boy trainer.

Johto’s got this cozy, lived-in feel—day turns to night, some Pokémon only show up at certain times, and there’s always something new around the corner. The Suicune stuff adds a little mystery, and the Battle Tower? That’s where I lost way too many hours trying to prove my team was unbeatable (spoiler: it wasn’t).

It’s weirdly comforting to replay now—like digging up an old notebook full of doodles, but the doodles are still awesome. If you’ve never played it, this is the version of Gold/Silver to grab. Just watch out for Whitney’s Miltank—that thing’s still a nightmare.
