Pokémon Silver was my first real RPG—I remember saving up allowance for weeks to grab that shiny silver cartridge. The moment you boot it up, that chiptune soundtrack hits you right in the nostalgia, and suddenly you're picking between Cyndaquil, Totodile, or Chikorita (I always went fire type, no regrets).
Johto feels bigger than Kanto ever did, with these little details that blew my mind back then—like how certain Pokémon only come out at night, or how the radio tower plot actually ties into Team Rocket’s mess. And Lugia? Still one of the coolest legendaries, especially with that underwater cave puzzle to reach it. The post-game trip back to Kanto was the cherry on top—like getting two regions for the price of one.
It’s janky by today’s standards (good luck with that bag space), but there’s something about the pixel art and the way your Pokémon follow you in HeartGold/SoulSilver that just sticks with you. If you’ve never played a pre-3D Pokémon game, this is the one that holds up best.
