Chasing Joker through tight factory conveyors and rooftops—your punches land with a satisfying crunch, and that little grappling hook actually works. Dies hard but fair for a Game Boy beat-em-up.

Game Overview

I picked up Batman: Return of the Joker for the Game Boy back in 1992, a Sunsoft release that came out around the same time as the NES version. It was one of those licensed games that felt like it had a bit more care put into it than most, fitting right in with the portable action titles of the era. You control Batman through a series of side scrolling stages, each with a distinct industrial or gothic look, trying to stop the Joker's latest scheme.

You move screen by screen, punching and kicking your way through thugs, with a grappling hook that lets you reach higher platforms or escape tricky situations. The main goal is straightforward: get to the end of each level and defeat the boss. The pacing is quick, but the difficulty can spike, especially during boss fights that require pattern recognition. It feels responsive and challenging in a way that makes each victory satisfying.
