I picked up Batman: Return of the Joker for the NES back in 1991, a game developed and published by Sunsoft. It came out during a time when licensed games were hit or miss, but Sunsoft had a decent track record with the platform. You control Batman through a series of side-scrolling levels, moving screen by screen while fighting Joker's henchmen. Your main goal is to stop the Joker's latest scheme, which involves defeating bosses and navigating environmental hazards. Batman uses batarangs and a shootable grappling hook to attack and traverse stages; the jet boots add a unique, floaty movement that changes how you approach jumps and combat. The game moves at a brisk pace, though some sections can feel challenging due to enemy placement and precision jumps. It feels satisfying to master the controls and push through each level with the driving soundtrack in the background.
