I picked up Batman: Revenge of the Joker for the Super Nintendo back in 1992, a Sunsoft release that came out during that early wave of SNES games trying to find their footing. It was a side-scrolling action game that felt very much of its time, with large, colorful sprites and a commitment to a darker, grittier tone that the console was starting to explore.

You control Batman through a series of linear stages, moving from left to right, punching and kicking an endless supply of the Joker's henchmen. Your main goal is straightforward: get to the end of each level and defeat the boss waiting for you. The game gives you a few special weapons to help, like a grappling hook for reaching higher platforms and a limited supply of batarangs to throw at distant enemies. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is punishing; enemies respawn quickly, and environmental hazards like electrified floors or spinning blades demand precise jumps. Playing it feels like a constant, tense struggle against the level design itself.
