Battle Master came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, published by Mirrorsoft. It was part of that wave of early 90s games trying to blend strategy with real time action, a time when developers were experimenting with how much control to give players in a fantasy setting. You don't see many games that try to do what it did, especially not with its particular mix of overhead planning and close up fighting.

You control a party of fantasy adventurers, choosing from races like humans, elves, and dwarves, each with their own strengths. The goal is to lead your squad through a series of battle screens, clearing out monsters to eventually confront a dark lord. The key mechanics are the dual view: you issue movement orders on a strategic map, then the game zooms in for real time combat where you directly control one character's attacks with a sword or bow. It's a difficult game; enemies hit hard and managing your entire party's positioning and health requires constant attention. Playing it feels like juggling a dozen problems at once, where one wrong move can unravel your entire strategy in seconds.
