I first played The Battle of Olympus on my Game Boy back in 1993, a time when handheld adventures were still pretty simple. It was developed by Infinity and published by Nintendo, and it stood out as one of the more ambitious action RPGs on the system, drawing clear inspiration from Zelda II but set in Greek mythology. You don't see many games from that era trying to blend exploration and combat so thoroughly on a handheld.

You control Orpheus, a hero trying to rescue his love, Eurydice, from the underworld. The game plays out across a large overworld and numerous side scrolling areas, with progress gated by items like the caduceus or winged boots. Combat relies on a short range spear and eventually a bow, while navigation involves careful jumping and searching for hidden passages. It's a slow, methodical game, often punishing if you rush, but there's a real sense of accomplishment in mapping out its world and overcoming its challenges. Exploring every screen and finally gaining access to a new region feels genuinely rewarding.
