Battletoads is that brutally hard NES beat 'em up where you play as three steroid-pumped toads named after skin rashes—Rash, Zitz, and Pimple. Yeah, the names are ridiculous, but the game doesn’t mess around. One minute you’re punching lizard goons, the next you’re dodging instant-death obstacles on a turbo bike that feels like it’s actively trying to kill you.
It was Rare’s answer to TMNT back in the day, but way meaner. The Dark Queen’s army throws everything at you, from bottomless pits to those infuriating speeder bike levels that still haunt my childhood. Most of the time, one of your toad buddies gets kidnapped, so you’re stuck with whoever’s left to rescue them (good luck with that).
There were a few sequels, including a weirdly fun team-up with Double Dragon, but nothing’s topped the original’s mix of absurdity and controller-throwing frustration. People still beg for a comeback, probably because they’ve repressed how hard this game actually is.
