Play BattleTanx - Global Assault Online
Drive your tank through post-apocalyptic cities, blast enemy vehicles, protect your convoy, and collect power-ups in this chaotic multiplayer destruction fest.
BattleTanx: Global Assault came out on the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by 3DO. It was part of that wave of late 90s console games that leaned into multiplayer destruction, a straightforward arcade style experience in an era just before online play became common. The single player campaign sets up a simple post-apocalyptic story where you fight to reclaim your kidnapped family, but it was really built for friends in the same room.
You control a tank commander, navigating through ruined cityscapes and highways, destroying enemy vehicles and structures with a variety of weapons like machine guns and homing missiles. The main objective is to clear each area of hostiles, often while protecting a convoy or securing a path forward. Key mechanics include collecting power-ups for better weapons, managing limited ammunition, and using the environment for cover as buildings collapse under fire. The pacing is fast, with enemies swarming from all sides, making careful movement and quick aiming essential. It feels like controlled chaos, where every shot matters and the screen fills with satisfying explosions.
