Game Overview

Best of the Best: Championship Karate is one of those Sega Genesis fighters that flew under the radar—which is a shame, because it’s got this rough-around-the-edges charm. You pick from a handful of karate fighters (I always went with the guy in the red gi for some reason) and jump straight into punchy, no-frills duels.

The moves are simple—jabs, kicks, the occasional flashy spin—but timing matters way more than button mashing. There’s something satisfying about landing a perfectly timed counter and watching your opponent crumple. The AI isn’t shy about punishing sloppy play, either—you’ll lose a few rounds before it clicks.

It’s not as polished as the big-name fighters of the era, but that’s part of the appeal. The sound effects alone—those crunchy hits and exaggerated grunts—feel straight out of a VHS martial arts flick. Grab a friend for versus mode if you can; that’s where the real chaos happens. Just don’t blame me when someone throws a controller.
