Big Karnak came out in 1991 as an arcade game from Konami. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling action games that filled arcades back then, sitting alongside other fantasy and adventure titles. You control a pharaoh armed with a sword, moving screen by screen through a cursed pyramid. Your main goal is to survive the journey and defeat the evil sorcerer at the end. The combat is straightforward; you slash at mummies and skeletons, but the real strategy comes from finding and using magical items. You can pick up a staff that shoots fireballs, letting you attack from a safer distance, and there are keys to collect to unlock doors blocking your path. The game is notoriously difficult, with cheap enemy placements and limited continues, forcing you to learn patterns through repetition. It feels like a deliberate, sometimes punishing crawl through a hostile tomb where every small victory is earned.
