Cold War flight simulator with 40+ aircraft. Choose NATO or USSR, manage dynamic campaigns, and complete missions like dogfights, bomber escorts, and recon. Features autopilot for long flights. Released in 1991 for Amiga.
Birds of Prey is one of those Amiga flight sims that somehow makes you feel like you're actually running an air war, not just hopping into random dogfights. You pick either NATO or the Soviets, and suddenly you're responsible for everything from scrambling fighters to protect your bases to sending bombers deep into enemy territory. The plane list is ridiculous—everything from an A-10 Warthog to an SR-71 Blackbird on the NATO side, or MiG-29s and hulking Tu-95 Bears if you go Soviet.
What’s cool is how your choices matter. Bases get bombed and stay damaged until repaired, so losing a runway early can leave you stuck with fewer planes for the next mission. And yeah, you’ll want to use autopilot sometimes—some of those recon flights are long, boring slogs until someone spots an enemy squadron. The "test pilot" missions are a weird but fun break from the campaign, letting you take experimental jets like the X-29 for a spin just to see how they handle.
It’s not just about shooting things down, either. You might be escorting bombers one mission, then dropping supplies behind enemy lines the next. Just don’t forget to save your pilot’s progress to a separate floppy—this game doesn’t forgive mistakes.
