Birds of Prey is one of those deep, old-school Amiga flight sims where you pick a side in a Cold War gone hot—NATO or the Soviets—and suddenly you're responsible for everything from dogfights to bombing runs. The sheer number of planes is wild: you've got everything from the clunky A-10 to the sleek SR-71 on the NATO side, while the Soviets throw MiGs and Sukhois at you. I remember hesitating for ages before picking my first aircraft—do I go for speed, firepower, or just the cool factor of the F-117 stealth bomber?
What’s neat is how the war evolves. Bases get bombed, runways cratered, and suddenly your favorite plane’s grounded until repairs happen. Missions range from chaotic dogfights to tense recon runs where getting spotted means a swarm of enemies. The autopilot’s a lifesaver for long hauls, though I’d still keep one hand near the eject button—just in case.
Oh, and don’t sleep on the test pilot missions. Flying the X-29 feels like strapping yourself to a rocket with wings. Just don’t expect it to help your campaign.
