Boggy '84 is one of those arcade relics that feels like it was cranked out in a basement during the home computer gold rush—simple, a little janky, but weirdly charming. You play as this guy who has to grab keys scattered across multi-level platforms, hopping between floors using springboards while enemies plod along on ladders. The controls take a second to get used to (jumping feels floaty, and descending requires awkward ladder shuffling), but once it clicks, there’s something satisfying about bouncing over a pursuer’s head just as they reach the top.
Later levels throw in random curveballs like a ski slope where you’re scrambling uphill while dodging enemies—though if you time it right, you can bonk them from below to temporarily knock them out. It’s no Mappy, but there’s a scrappy, low-budget appeal to its clunky chaos. Just don’t expect polish.
